Anna, my hero

Photographer · Author

Christopher Briscoe

I document war not from a distance, but from kitchen tables, hospital corridors and beside fresh graves.

Nobody assigned me to do this, but once I crossed the border into Ukraine, I couldn’t stop.

Meet Anna

The reason I return

Her name is Anna.

She sits at her father’s grave holding a teddy bear dressed in camouflage. She is one of the reasons I keep returning.

The war is measured in miles. Its cost is measured in people.

Behind the camera

Some stories won’t let you go.

I’ve survived missile barrages and sat in silence with widows. I return because their stories deserve to be carried beyond Ukraine.
